One Small Step…Coming to MLWGS this Spring

If you listen to our local NPR station, Virginia Public Media (VPM), then you may have heard about a StoryCorps initiative called One Small Step. The program focuses on fostering conversations between people on different sides of the political aisle, creating opportunities for them to listen to each other about their life experiences, hopes, and fears. The goal is to nurture a sense of shared humanity.

Here’s a brief article about One Small Step. Intrigued? Listen to these featured excerpts: one conversation between a daughter and father discussing how their political differences have influenced their relationship, and a conversation between two young adults who met each other in an unexpected way during a protest.

Richmond is one of four lead cities for One Small Step, and this spring, the MLWGS Library is coordinating with StoryCorps and VPM to bring this program to our MLWGS community.

Watch this space for more information in second semester about how to participate. If you’re a MLWGS student, faculty member, or alumnus interested in helping organize this opportunity, please email me at wdegroat (at)

Attend a talk by historian Dr. Garrett-Scott on Jan. 12th

On the evening of January 12, the MW Library will host a Zoom talk by historian Dr. Shennette Garrett-Scott, author of Banking on Freedom, a book in the Columbia Studies in the History of U.S. Capitalism series that features Maggie L. Walker.

Dr. Garrett-Scott teaches at the University of Mississippi. If her name sounds familiar, you may have read the Wall Street Journal article about Maggie Walker a couple months ago that mentioned Banking on Freedom. A free reading guide for the book is available from Columbia University Press. You can check out the book from the MW Library, the Richmond Public Library, the Library of Virginia, or if you’re affiliated with the University of Richmond, from their Boatwright Library as well.

MLWGS students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumni, as well as alumni of the original Maggie L. Walker High School are welcome to attend! Please follow the registration link below. If you have any questions about this special event, please email Ms. DeGroat at
