Free Kid’s Book Creator from Amazon

Thinking about entering the library’s dragon-themed picture book contest?

There are no restrictions on the format of the picture book.  It can be beautifully handmade with a hand-sewn binding or created in an e-book format with or without interactive features.

If you’re considering an e-book version, check out Amazon’s free Kid’s Book Creator.  Released last year, this free tool allows you to either upload a completed PDF version of the story for basic reading on a Kindle or create a book page-by-page by importing drawings or photographs, and perhaps adding interactive features to your story.

Here are two resources to get you started:

Cool contest opportunity!

Do you have an affinity for dragons?  Did you grow up inventing tales about riding dragons, fighting dragons, or befriending dragons?

Write and illustrate a dragon-themed picture book and submit it to Ms. DeGroat by Feb. 9, 2016 for an opportunity to win prizes.

Solo and team entries accepted.

Winning entries will be added to the library’s collection and made available to fellow Dragons for checkout.

See Ms. DeGroat if you have any questions.

fall challenge – create a book spine poem

Can you arrange  two or more books in the MW Library’s collection so that the main titles visible on their spines create a poem?

Give it a try! When you have one ready, let Ms. D know and she’ll photograph it.  Participants are eligible for prizes.

For inspiration, check out the web site of Nina Katchadourian , who’s been creating book spine poems from public and private collections since 1993.

writing contest deadline extended

Due to students’ limited on-campus access to computers for the past two weeks, I’m extending the deadline for the Bike Month creative nonfiction (500-word limit)/flash fiction (200-word limit) contest to June 1.

Remember – the story must involve a bike or biking.

Congratulations to Alessandro, Noma, Hailey, and Cameron, the latest Bike Month prize winners.

There’s one last chance to win prizes: Bike to School Day this Friday, June 1.   Refreshments and prizes before school.

Live too far away to bike here? Wear your helmet to school to be eligible for lunchtime prize drawings.
